In this role you will support the General Counsel (Retirement and Insurance) in providing a first class commercial and insurance legal advice to the UK Insurance and General Insurance divisions of Legal & General.

To support the General Counsel (Retirement and Insurance) in providing a first class commercial and insurance legal advice to the UK Insurance and General Insurance divisions of Legal & General.

The role holder will be responsible for providing day-to-day legal advice and transaction support to the UK Insurance division to ensure that the Group's competitive interests are as well positioned as practicable and that there has been due compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements as well as the Group's own internal governance procedures.

  • Provide legal advice and transaction support to the UK Insurance and General Insurance divisions to ensure that the Group's competitive interests are as well positioned as practicable and that there has been due compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements as well as the Group's own internal governance procedures, and in particular to:
    • negotiate the legal aspects of a range of distribution transactions;
    • negotiate the legal aspects of a range of reinsurance transactions;
    • assist with the ongoing development of L&G standard form documentation;
    • advise on legal issues relating to the UK Insurance division’s products.
  • Report on the terms of material contracts and associated legal risks and mitigants to the UK Insurance division senior management and relevant Insurance, General Insurance and Group committees. To assist the General Counsel (Retirement and Insurance) to identify and report any matters which are of of strategic, reputational or material financial value to Group General Counsel.
  • To work with the other Legal and Governance teams to ensure that there is a coherent and seamless delivery of legal and governance advice to the Group.
  • To represent the Group where appropriate at regulatory and industry forums.
  • To manage external legal fees to ensure business costs are kept to a minimum and manage external legal advice to ensure sound and commercially useful advice is provided to the business.
  • To ensure there is appropriate horizon scanning of legal regulatory developments and ensure that the Group is advised in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • To co-ordinate with external counsel and internal advisory functions including the arranging of legal education and training.
  • 2.1 or above degree from a recognised UK university (or a similar level of qualification gained from a non-UK university)
  • England & Wales qualified solicitor (or a solicitor or attorney qualified in another jurisdiction)
  • Commercial / insurance legal practice experience is essential.
  • Detailed knowledge of the relevant statutory, regulatory and common law applicable to insurance products and distribution is desirable.
  • Experience of working in-house in financial services would be desirable.
  • Detailed knowledge of the relevant statutory, regulatory and common law applicable to a major financial services group.
  • An awareness of legislative and best practice change and its applicability to a financial services organisation such as Legal & General Group PLC.
  • Has an understanding of the general business and financial services environment and regulatory business requirements and its impact on Legal & General's strategy.

We would envisage the role being suitable for an individual who has circa 3 years’ post qualification experience with some of that having been gained in an in-house financial services environment. Please note this is a guide only and we would be willing to consider applications from individuals with different levels of post qualification experience.

The role is envisaged to be a full time role although we are happy to consider the role on a part-time or job-share basis.

Our view is that this role is suitable for agile working. This means we would consider a more flexible working arrangement, where your hours and work location are managed according to business, customer and personal needs. For this role, you would be based in London, but you could work in other Legal & General offices or at home, as necessary, provided this meets business needs. Details of agile working will be discussed during the interview process.
