You will be responsible for indirect tax advice, transaction support, tax risk management and compliance oversight and reviews in relation to the Group’s, real assets and direct investments businesses with a significant focus on property and fund structures.  The day-to-day indirect tax compliance is carried out by local finance teams.

The Group undertakes a range of investment management, investment funds, property development and leasing activities involving commercial, residential and relevant purpose real estate assets, in respect of which the role holder would support the Head of Indirect Tax to provide transaction specific advice and to provide technical support to the relevant local finance teams in managing their related BAU VAT compliance and reporting, management of any HMRC engagement required and carrying out periodic reviews of the relevant compliance processes.

This is a mixed role and while primarily focused on advice and transactions does include technical support on and oversight of the BAU compliance activities particularly in the more complex space for example the preparation and submission of appropriate PESMs.  While the role holder will be primarily focused on property and funds related VAT, the role involves providing more general support as needed by the Head of Indirect Tax to ensure that accurate and timely indirect tax advice and reporting is provided to the Group

  • Advise the relevant Business Units on the VAT implications, considerations and risks relating to projects and transactions as they arise, in particular on direct investments and real estate assets, liaising with the Head of Indirect Tax, the BU and other members of the Group Tax team.   
  • Provide assistance to the BUs on indirect tax compliance matters relating to the Group’s direct investments in property.  This may include, for example, oversight of or support on the preparation and submission of routine applications such as VAT registrations, de-registrations, grouping and Option-to-Tax as well as reviews of quarterly VAT returns and responding to HMRC queries. Identify and implement process improvements in relation to these.
  • Oversight of indirect tax compliance for the Group’s direct investments in property, working closely with other tax business partners. Identify, communicate and manage the VAT risks associated with these.
  • Support the Head of Indirect Tax in business initiatives related to indirect tax as required, for example in relation to VAT process improvement, transformation and documentation, as well as other VAT matters relevant to the wider L&G Group.
  • Assist in the preparation and submission of Partial Exemption Special Method applications where required by the relevant BUs and proactively manage related communications with HMRC to reach a successful outcome, liaising with the BU and Head of Indirect Tax.
  • Maintain good technical knowledge of UK VAT and develop knowledge as to the interaction with other property taxes as necessary to collaboratively support the relevant BUs together with Group Tax colleagues.  Communicate technical issues clearly to non-tax-specialists.
  • Liaise with key finance and business contacts to build networks and facilitate the smooth management and communication of indirect tax issues.
  • Provide support and training on VAT technical and process matters to the relevant BU finance teams.
  • Qualified Accountant desirable but not essential, otherwise with sufficient experience of financial accounting to maintain up-to-date professional knowledge.
  • Preferably a Member or fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation or with sufficient tax experience to maintain up-to-date professional knowledge.
  • Good knowledge of UK Indirect Tax legislation, HMRC VAT Policy and indirect tax case law with a particular focus on Land and Property. Good knowledge of Financial Services VAT would also be desirable.
  • Have an understanding of the general business and financial services environment and regulatory business requirements and its impact on business strategy.
  • Develop a practical knowledge of each of the Group's businesses and how they interrelate including a knowledge of the operational structures of senior management and their reporting lines.
  • To develop and maintain a working knowledge of the Group's policies and procedures including the Group’s risk management framework.
  • Sound working knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word, Outlook and Powerpoint.
  • Been able to demonstrate effective communication techniques alongside good analytical skills
