You will be responsible for supporting the Head of Legal in providing first class legal and governance advice to the Legal & General Group. You will be part of the Group Legal team and will be responsible for providing day-to-day legal advice and transaction support to the LGRI business (including UK PRT, reinsuring and L&GRe), to ensure that the interests are as well positioned as practicable and that there has been due compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements as well as the Group's own internal governance procedures.

 

  • Advising, negotiating, managing and reporting on the legal aspects of a range of LGR transactions including; reinsurance contracts, smaller pension risk transfer (“PRT”) transactions, reviewing and negotiating commercial agreements ancillary to the PRT business, and supporting L&G Re (Bermudian business) on all aspects of regulatory and commercial work
  • Assisting with the on-going development of L&G standard form documentation; and advising on financial services and pensions regulatory issues.
  • Providing governance support to Legal & General Group Plc and Group subsidiary companies.
  • Working with the other Legal and Governance teams to ensure that there is a coherent and seamless delivery of legal and governance advice to the Group.
  • Representing the Group where appropriate at regulatory and industry forums.
  • Assisting the Head of Legal to identify and report any matters which are of strategic, reputational or material financial value to the General Counsel.
  • Managing external counsel, key stakeholders and other third parties and to ensure business costs are kept to a minimum and manage external legal advice to ensure sound and commercially useful advice is provided to the business.
  • Ensuring there is appropriate horizon scanning of legal regulatory developments and ensure that the Group is advised in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Co-ordinating with external counsel and internal advisory functions including the arranging of legal education and training.

 

  • 2.1 or above degree from a recognised UK university (or a similar level of qualification gained from a non-UK university)
  • England & Wales qualified solicitor (or a solicitor or attorney qualified in another jurisdiction)
  • Insurance/financial services legal practice experience is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience of working in-house in financial services and experience of pensions law would be desirable but is not essential.
  • Shows some knowledge and understanding of the relevant statutory, regulatory and common law applicable to a major financial services group.
  • An understanding of the general business and financial services environment and regulatory business requirements and its impact on the Legal & General Group’s strategy
  • Competent in use of IT systems and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple large transactions simultaneously is essential
  • Ability to provide clear advice to meet the business objectives
  • Articulate, honest and authoritative in finding the right style and words to influence, challenge or motivate a group or individual
  • Ability to create and deliver clear and concise written or verbal reports and to advise others on doing so.
