The Insurance industry is changing rapidly and with that so should our ways of working. At Legal & General Insurance we’re on a mission to adapt how we approach projects, business challenges and day-to-day activites by instilling agile practices across all our business areas.

We have an excellent opportunity for professionally certified Scrum Masters to help use the scrum framework to solve complex problems outside of IT development and software development – in non-technical dev teams consisting of internal personnel and 3rd Party Partners.

You will be working with cross-functional teams and specialisms, embedding agile thinking, coaching them in how to apply agile values, principles and practices and help us delivery successful outcomes. You will support all aspects of the delivery process, combining both technical excellence with your understanding and practical experience of how scrum can be aplied in a  varierd of scenarios.

As Scrum Master you will:

  • Stay up to date with Scrum Best Practice, as an active member of the Scrum Community (internal and external) to ensure the Scrum framework is applied correctly and consistently and can be improved where required.
  • Coach cross-functional teams utilising the Scrum framework for the tackling complex business problems, product development, projects and initiatives.  This builds on numerous successful examples we’ve already delivered over the last 2 years using the framework in non-technical teams.
  • Continually advocate and champion the Scrum Values and Empirical Pillars; working with other members of the Scrum Master community to share common challenges, opportunities, best practice and solutions from retrospectives. Facilitate Scrum ceremonies (events);sprint planning, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews and retrospectives.  More experienced dev teams, are more self-serving, but you can expect to be coaching a full range of dev teams on the framework.
  • Support the dev team to implement the right artefacts and controls that help them identify, self-manage and remove impediments.   Coach the dev team to utilise things like User Stories, Kanban Boards, Burn Down & Burn Up charts to aid transparency and visibility to help with tracking and self-reporting team-level delivery metrics. Help the team radiate information and be fully transparent.
  • Shield the team to prevent distractions that interfere with sprint goals. Develop clear and concise escalation points and build strong relationship with the product owners (PO)
  • Facilitate discussion and conflict resolution, empower the team to self-organise and manage.
  • Take responsibility for coaching and mentoring team members..
  • Effectively collaborate and communicate with the dev team as well as your POs, Senior POs and other Scrum Masters.

 

Agile Values, Principles & Practices (essential)

  • An experienced, professionally certified Scrum Master who has helped transition and coach teams in applying the Scrum framework, and agile practices.
  • Desirable to have experience in applying Scrum to non-technical teams or blended teams.
  • Desirable to have experience working with a mix of fully dedicated and partially aligned resource in Dev teams.
  • Experience as an agile evangelist helping to evolve the culture of an organisation.

Leadership (essential)

  • Experience in coaching and mentoring diverse teams and senior stakeholders in the Scrum framework and desirable to have experience of other agile tools, practices and systems such as Kanban. Desirable to have experience or an understanding of more traditional waterfall methods or DSDM.
  • Experience in motivating high performing teams, fostering and culture of continuous improvement, failing forwards and learning to improve future success.
  • Experience of working with remote, virtual and cross functional teams, conducting virtual ceremonies (events) using digital collaboration tools.   We have managed to maintain quality and velocity throughout Covid-19, and would expect virtual ceremonies (events) to be a continuing practice.
  • Experience being a self-starter with confidence, persistence and determination to develop yourself and others in Scrum and agile mindset.

 

Business & Industry

  • Experienced in working with a wide range of organisational structures, desirable to have experience in both large corporate/ traditional and experience of smaller (agile native or start up)
  • Financial Services experience is desirable or a similarly regulated multi-functioned/specialised operation. 

Design and Delivery Process

  • Experience in the delivery of digital development projects is desirable but not essential.
  • Technically aware of all elements of the delivery process from discovery to production deployment
  • An understanding of how “Sprint Release Trains” may need to work alongside more traditional release windows and dependencies, or governance processes.

Digital and Technology focus

  • Digitally focussed and tech savvy.
  • Technical experience in agile tooling and technologies.
  • Desirable to have an understanding of automated testing frameworks and techniques.

Customer Awareness

  • A supportive, communicative and collaborative approach to working in a team.
  • An understanding of the different drivers and needs of customers, distributors and partners.
  • A track record of developing strong relationships with POs and leadership teams.

Our view is that this role is suitable for agile working. This means we would consider a more flexible working arrangement, where your hours and work location are managed according to business, customer and personal needs’ For this role, you would be based in Hove or London, but you could work in other Legal and General offices or at home, as necessary, provided this meets business needs.
