The role will work within Legal & General Capital’s residential rental investment team. The role holder will be primarily responsible for providing strategic investment oversight of LGC’s affordable housing investments including Legal & General Affordable Homes, LGC’s 100% owned operational subsidiary.

In addition, the role holder will work with other colleagues to lead on the origination, execution and active investment management of other residential rental housing initiatives.

Purpose:

The role will work within Legal & General Capital’s residential rental investment team. The role holder will be primarily responsible for providing strategic investment oversight of LGC’s affordable housing investments including Legal & General Affordable Homes, LGC’s 100% owned operational subsidiary.

In addition, the role holder will work with other colleagues to lead on the origination, execution and active investment management of other residential rental housing initiatives.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership and support to a recently launched in-house affordable housing developer, asset manager and operator, Legal & General Affordable Homes. Oversee the full investment oversight of the business working closely with management to support its growth
  • Support all fundraising requirements of the affordable housing business, including equity and debt fundraising, working closely with advisors as appropriate and ensuring the corporate structure remains efficient and fit for purpose
  • Originate, transact and manage investments within the residential housing sector for L&G to meet its business objectives, providing significant input to the shaping and implementation of residential housing strategy
  • Be accountable for the completion of due diligence and on-going active management of new investments including:
    • Undertaking and overseeing asset-level commercial, technical, financial and legal due diligence work streams. Manage second line due diligence and governance assessments undertaken by specialist colleagues from across L&G to complete the required internal components of the due diligence on the investment.
    • Manage the negotiation and ensure there is clarity of the legal structure and that the risks associated with the transaction are understood
    • Be responsible for the economic valuation and modelling to deliver a quantitative appraisal of assets in terms of expected returns and evaluation of how the structures will behave under loss scenarios
    • Where new business lines are launched, be a leader in its successful launch and implementation
  • Secure approval for any acquisition or disposal in line with group governance policies and processes. Ensure that information provided to decision making committees is accurate and risks are clearly presented.
  • Ensure all Management Information is high quality, timely and correct to support decision making, implementation of strategies and management of the investments
  • The role holder will always operate within delegated authorities, risk tolerances and other limits which apply to Direct Investment.
  • Where appropriate carry out the duties of a Company Director with integrity and diligence; ensure that appropriate boards and management committees are established and accountable; that records are maintained and that meetings are held regularly; and that the business operates effectively and competently at all levels.

Qualifications:

  • Ideally Economics, Real Estate, Engineering or Mathematical Graduate with ACCA/CFA or equivalent

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Experience in principal or advisory investment roles, with significant experience in the residential housing or real estate sectors 
  • Experience working in the affordable housing sector desirable but not essential 
  • Experience of working with institutional equity and debt investors 
  • Experience of managing formal due diligence including review of contracts, assessment of risks 
  • Ability to assess risk and to work with other parties to ensure risks of an investment are understood and accepted 
  • Commercially astute and demonstrate excellent negotiation skills 
  • Strong interpersonal skills 
  • Excellent quantitative skills
