This role will be responsible for delivering the MER and allocated expenses (actuals, plan and forecast) using the expense and allocation model and assist with continual development and evolution of this system.

Purpose of the role…

Deliver the MER and allocated expenses (actuals, plan and forecast) using the expense and allocation model. Assist with continual development and evolution of this system.

Act as an expert in relation to expense and allocation reporting queries. Provide reconciliations on the cost base to ensure that the overall cost base is appropriately monitored. Lead and provide analytical support and management information to business partners and FD teams. 

Key Responsibilities…

Allocated Expenses/Tax and Expense ledger

  • Reporting Control the allocation process to meet business demands within agreed timescales; ensuring the integrity and robustness of the data and recommending changes where appropriate. Work collaboratively with the divisional Finance teams to provide tailored MI which gives clarity and insight into the expense base.  Responsible for the delivery of the month end and quarterly reporting.
  • Development Lead the proactive evolution of the expense ledger, tax and allocation model and implementation of model changes and process improvements to meet business quality and timing requirements.

Expense and Allocation Model

  • Advocacy Be an advocate of the systems, utilising strong levels of knowledge to develop both the user community and the platform to advise and challenge the user community to harness the platform for maximum efficiency and productivity.
  • Development Lead the ongoing development of the companywide expense planning tool and projects impacting processes.
  • Contribute to the proactive evolution of the allocation model; and the implementation of model changes / process improvements to meet quality and timing requirements for each forecasting cycle. Become SME for expense allocation model within Finance.

Forecasting & Planning

  • Assist with the timetabling of the expense Plan and Forecast processes and documentation and liaise with the finance systems team to update the calculations.
  • Manage authorisation process for allocation updates and provide MI that promotes any process / system improvements and a culture of transparency on allocated costs.

Financial Controls

  • Provide a strong control framework, regularly review and update process documentation (RACIs, process maps, policies, process risk and control framework documents and user guides).
  • Perform checks to ensure accuracy within the allocation model – both internally and with divisional Finance teams – to promote accuracy and consistency.
  • Perform reconciliations between source systems ensure divisional Finance teams conform to Group allocation policy. 
  • Ensure there is a clear understanding of where expense allocation data is used and how this impacts the group results.

Business Partnering

  • Actively engage divisional Finance teams to identify opportunities and challenges for improvement.
  • Chair the monthly Allocation system development forum with the user community to ensure change initiatives are communicated to the divisional Finance teams.

Qualifications

  • ACCA / CIMA finalist / newly qualified
  • A degree is desirable but not essential if comparable experience in an analytical finance role can be demonstrated.

Knowledge

  • Advanced Excel
  • A general awareness of UK GAAP and an understanding of the ethical framework for finance professionals
  • A good understanding of the financial service sector, its key regulators and the nature of long term insurance business.
  • A good understanding of process integrity and task dependency in complex processes sufficient to propose design options, audit, test and understand the constraints of complex spreadsheet and database models.

Skills

  • Strong desktop skills – particularly Excel - with the ability to gather data from a number of complex systems, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Strong finance system skills – particularly on Oracle ledger systems and MI reporting tools – with the ability to integrate and assess data for validity and onward reporting
  • Good understanding of expense allocation methodologies and their applications in meeting business requirements.
  • Good written and verbal communication
  • Ability to interpret numerical data and understand business metrics in the context of allocated expenses.
