We are looking for a Head of Mortgage Lending who will deliver quality mortgage lending decisions through the recruitment, management, training and competency of underwriters, their ongoing professional development and compliance to policy. They will also ensure first line oversight and monitoring of lending decisions is effective and create and lead a culture of continuous process improvement.

  • Deliver quality mortgage lending decisions within our lending risk appetite, through the recruitment, management, training and competency of underwriters, their ongoing professional development and compliance to policy, including the Underwriting Policy criteria.  Ensure first line oversight and monitoring of lending decisions is effective and identifies early indication of weakness.  Promote our lending services and provide our funding partners with confidence in our lending decisions and capability.
  • Create and lead a culture of continuous Underwriting Policy criteria review, in particular seeking opportunities to increase our lending within our lending risk appetite.  Present these opportunities to our Underwriting Criteria Committee whilst continuing to manage the expectation and needs of our funding partners.
  • Create and lead a culture of continuous process improvement, including new ways to deliver lending solutions, in particular, seeking to provide quicker and more efficient mortgage lending services and providing a better service to our customers and their financial intermediaries.
  • Manage the ongoing performance and relationship with suppliers associated with mortgage lending, for example, credit bureaus, property valuations, title insurance and legal conveyancers.  Ensure that the service provided is commensurate with our brand and service levels and develops in line with the business strategy and work with those suppliers to develop the required service improvements.
  • Develop a leading customer and intermediary contact strategy, including digital communications, ensuring the timely and accurate communications.  Responsible for the delivery of regulated disclosures and communications for all lending activities.
  • Develop MI, insight strategies and work closely with the LGHF second line risk functions and the Operations leadership team to identify instances where underwriting decisions may have led to a poor customer outcome or a lending decision outside of policy/lending risk appetite.  Ensure this insight is incorporated into our process, policy and lending decisions to mitigate reoccurrence.
  • Treating Customers Fairly (TCF) - Ensure that the principles of Conduct Risk are embedded into your day to day operations to deliver good customer outcomes at all times. Ensure that all business processes and internal controls within your role are designed and performed in a way that delivers good customer outcomes and demonstrates effective management of Conduct Risk.
  • To take the lead in all matters with regard to the management of employees, ensuring that management discretion is used in a consistent manner and that the area follows the Group’s policies and procedures including the Partnership Agreement to maximise business performance.
  • Extensive experience in residential mortgages is essential and if possible lifetime mortgages.
  • In depth knowledge of mortgage underwriting and process.
  • Understanding of services relating to mortgage underwriting and new business, for example property valuation, conveyancing and land/title registration.
  • Experience of managing large teams of underwriters involved in the assessment of mortgage applications and the delivery of new business.
  • Effective written and spoken communicator at all levels, with the ability manage senior stakeholders and present at group committees.
  • Demonstrable leadership and influencing skills across direct and virtual teams in complex organisation structures.
  • Comfortable with working independently, a self-starter and ability to assume ownership of tasks.
  • The ability to create good working relationships, a good team player, contributing ideas and putting team objectives first.
  • The ability to build a strong internal and external network to ensure Legal & General Home Finance are represented and to share and embed best practices.
