The Underwriting Team Manager will lead an underwriting team of up to 10 people who assess and process a variety of specialised mortgage products.

  • Lead a team of up to 10 people including management of the day-to-day activities of the team. Ensuring all individuals are motivated, engaged, trained and developed to meet quality and service requirements.
  • Support delivery of a customer and people focused culture and act as role model of the L&G behaviours.
  • Through coaching, improve the quality, performance and lending risk understanding of the underwriters within your team.
  • Provide guidance and best practice to ensure the highest technical standards are maintained across your team.
  • Interpret policies and procedures, ensuring that processes are documented and that these are implemented effectively to meet business, customer and cost objectives. 
  • Support the Head of Mortgage Lending in the oversight of underwriting policy and processes; To ensure these are efficient and fully compliant, with effective controls in place.
  • Make recommendations to senior management relating to development of the underwriting policies, including risk acceptance criteria and policy wordings
  • Manage the team in accordance with the Company’s policies and procedures, including the Partnership Agreement, performance, attendance and conduct, so that the team’s business objectives are achieved consistently.
  • Analyse feedback from all sources to ensure that customers’ reasonable expectations of performance and service are met and where failings are identified, provide information to relevant areas to enable changes to be made.
  • Technical knowledge of Mortgage Underwriting is essential
  • Evidenced delivery of material improvements in Customer Experience & Service metrics in a highly regulated environment through the use of recognised Continuous Improvement methodologies.
  • Demonstrate a high level of understanding of resource planning, being able to interpret resource plans and drive change
  • Proven ability to lead and manage change in a fast-paced organisation.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong business commercial awareness
  • Experience of managing teams
  • Understanding of Equality & Diversity, Discipline and Grievance policies. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively in oral, presentational and written form to a range of audiences.
  • Able to travel occasionally across UK locations
