Leading and developing the Venture Capital team and LGC’s investments into the sector to meet its business objectives and manage the implementation, so that profits are increased whilst ensuring exposures are within agreed tolerances

The role holder is accountable for:

  • Leading and developing the Venture Capital team and LGC’s investments into the sector to meet its business objectives and manage the implementation, so that profits are increased whilst ensuring exposures are within agreed tolerances (including risk and CRE appetite).
  • Leading, setting, developing and full oversight LGC’s venture capital investment strategy for LGC shareholder funds.
  • Responsible for investing L&G’s balance sheet in Venture Capital funds run by external managers.
  • Responsible for investing directly in relevant strategic start ups
  • Responsible for working across the group to support Direct Venture investing
  • Working across the LGC teams, its operational business and investments and the wider Group, actively promote collaboration and seek opportunities to maximise total group value creation
  • Accountable for leading on all aspects of deal acquisition and disposal including sourcing, origination, pipeline management, valuation, selection, negotiation, structuring, diligence, acquisition, and disposal of investments in the venture capital and related sectors.
  • Responsible for structuring investments and transactions in accordance with risk tolerance and appetite
  • Responsible for leading on asset management and operational oversight/mandate management/portfolio management of venture capital investments in order to drive synergies and monitor performance
  • Responsible for leading on risk monitoring, management and mitigation across venture capital investment portfolio
  • Responsible for liaising with external agents (including advisors, managers, banks, contractors, etc.).
  • Responsible for investment committee briefings and gaining approvals where necessary
  • Responsible for leading on new markets & risk modelling
  • Leading on comparable risk appraisal to assess value-added risk –adjusted returns
  • Leading on risk analysis (EC, IFRS, environmental/climate, market, technical, legal, liquidity, tax, reputational) and CRO/risk director liaison
  • Responsible for ensuring the strategy is appropriate for the L&G balance sheet under UK Insurance regulations.
  • Responsible for setting the strategy out clearly and the role holder will ensure key stakeholders understand the strategy and have approved.
  • Carry out the duties of Director with integrity and diligence and ensure that appropriate boards and management committees are established and accountable, that records are maintained, that meetings are held regularly and that the business operates effectively and competently at all levels.
  • Ensure corporate strategy, structures and governance processes remains optimised to maximise the value accretion across the Group
  • The role holder will always operate within delegated authorities and risk and other limits which apply to Direct Investments
  • Treating Customers Fairly

  • Provide leadership and managing of the Venture Capital team, ensuring that effective people, processes, systems and controls are in place, and that functions are integrated effectively, to ensure that venture capital investments adhere with Legal & General’s Customer Experience and Treating Customers Fairly policy

Degree educated or equivalent

Proven leadership and management experience of an investment team

10+ years’ experience in investment focussed roles, with significant experience in venture capital investment

Significant experience of working with institutional equity and debt investors

A highly numerate background, able to analyse financial information and comfortable with valuation techniques

Experience of deal origination

Experience of all aspects of deal acquisition and disposal, including structuring, negotiation, due diligence, review of contracts and assessment of risk.

Ability to assess risk and to work with other parties to ensure risks of an investment are understood and accepted.

Shows a strong interest in the Venture Capital Industry, technology and the new digital economy

Must be commercially astute and demonstrate excellent negotiation skills

Excellent quantitative skills

Excellent interpersonal skills, able to operate at a senior level within a corporate organisation
