Responsible for championing and embedding a culture of technical quality and security across the L&G Group’s websites and digital applications, all project teams within and beyond the portfolio, including definition and maintenance of processes, tools and teams.  This includes the recruitment, development and retention of high-quality technical talent.

Work across the Group Digital portfolio and across our business, managing, coaching and developing a community of developers to ensure project and software quality is delivered.

For this Hove based role a working style would be considered enabling flexibility around how, when and where work is completed according to business, customer and personal needs where reasonable.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate technical leadership to enable excellent development activity across a portfolio of concurrent Digital projects (£5-15m cost per year), driving high levels of software quality and code standards while maintaining fit for purpose governance, a pragmatic approach, and using innovative tools and techniques.
  • Strive for technical excellence by defining and governing good technical practices and standards across the community of up to 65 people, and the tools used to complete this development work. Promoting and advocating these standards and tools across other Digital delivery teams across the L&G Group.
  • Work with the Head of Digital Development to determine, monitor and review the allocation of people to projects, whether permanent or temporary resources, to optimize for project outcomes, personal development and staffing blend.
  • Provide line-management and professional guidance, and plan and coordinate development and coaching for a team of 15-30 developers, managing the team in accordance with the Company’s policies and procedures, including the Partnership Agreement, so that the team’s business objectives are achieved consistently.
  • Provide operational management support and coaching, and monitor performance levels across a community of up to 65 developers, across Legal & General’s office locations and including resources from suppliers and the contract market.
  • Ensure creation and support for all coding standards, pattern libraries, tools and processes for the applications under Digital Operations ownership.
  • Maintain a focus on technology techniques, security, languages and trends across relevant industry and technical sectors, and plan for their adoption when relevant, including development of proof-of-concepts to educate decision-making.

Qualifications:

  • A computer science or related degree would be an advantage but not essential depending on demonstrable experience.
  • Certified Scrum Master (CSM), Scrum Professional (CSP) or equivalent experience would also be an advantage.

Knowledge:

  • An expert understanding of software development, testing and Agile delivery processes, tools and frameworks, and why they are important.
  • A passionate interest in programming, software development, and technology. An interest and knowledge of cyber security and associated tools and techniques.
  • An understanding of how software quality can be improved holistically at a cultural and behavioural level.
  • An expert understanding of development tools, techniques and patterns, and their appropriate balance and application across multiple programming languages and architectures.
  • An understanding of the different drivers and needs of customers, distributors and partners, across all business units.
  • An expert understanding of digital products and technologies, their development, usage and application.
  • Proficient and up-to-date knowledge of Java and JavaScript.

Skills:

  • Very strong technical background as a Software Developer, gained in an Agile development environment.
  • Experience of and focus on the leadership of teams who have delivered successful modern software development projects adopting agile principles, with significant front-end development and automated testing and deployment. Experience of running distributed teams is an advantage.
  • Extensive experience in software development projects with a deep knowledge of all aspects of software delivery and life cycle, from inception to delivery, including continuous integration, and test-driven development.
  • Experience of line management and professional development, especially within a large corporate environment.
  • Experience of working in a matrix organisation with multiple onshore/offshore vendors.
  • Exceptional listening, written and verbal communication skills including client facing/consulting skills.
  • Proficient interpersonal skills and an ability to influence key decision makers across our business.
