Responsible for managing the Group's indirect tax compliance reporting.  This includes managing the accurate and timely submission of VAT returns, IPT returns, EC sales lists and other submissions made to HM Revenue and Customs.  To take on responsibility for the environmental tax reporting and compliance e.g. carbon reduction programme.

Support the Senior Tax Advisory Manager in the delivery of all tax services, advice, policies, plans and strategies in relation to the indirect taxes specialism.  Responsible for identifying indirect tax optimisation opportunities, consistent with Group Tax policy.

Support the Senior Tax Advisory Manager in the delivery of tax services, advice, policies, plans and strategies in relation to operational taxes.

Provide indirect tax advice and recommendations to the Group’s business areas and support the tax advisory teams within the Group on specific projects as necessary.

Assist Senior Tax Advisory Manager with maintaining and developing a good working relationship with HM Revenue and Customs.

To make process improvements to VAT and operational tax process.

Maintain good technical knowledge of indirect tax issues within the financial services sector and develop a good commercial understanding of the Insurance Industry.  Assess new legislation and case law for applicability to L&G and prepare representations on behalf of L&G to relevant tax authorities and industry bodies or forums to ensure the Group’s issues and needs are represented.

Communicate key VAT and operational tax issues clearly and concisely to non-tax specialists.

Provide support and training on VAT and operational taxes technical and process matters to the Cardiff Finance and Expenses team and BUs with responsibility for VAT returns.

Identify and evaluate key Indirect Tax tax risks within the L&G Group, ensuring effective risk management processes are operated and reported to Group, and that the compliance procedures are cost effective and appropriate to meet the Group’s Indirect Tax compliance requirements.  Responsible for the indirect taxes sign-offs for Senior Accounting Officer requirements.

  • A recognised professional financial qualification, e.g. CTA, AIIT, CA, ACA with a minimum of two years' post-qualifying experience, or with equivalent experience of financial accounting.
  • Experience of a financial services environment.
  • If trained by HM Revenue and Customs, a developed commercial experience in either the Big 4 or in industry, preferably in both.
  • Member or fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation or with sufficient tax experience to maintain up-to-date professional knowledge.
  • High level knowledge of UK Taxes Acts covering VAT, IPT, NIC and stamp duty to the extent that they apply to the companies in the group for which tax responsibility held.
  • Knowledge of the key reporting requirements of the FSA and other regulatory bodies where appropriate.
  • Understanding of the key concepts which drive regulation within our markets.
  • Have an understanding of the general business and financial services environment and regulatory business requirements and its impact on Legal & General's strategy.
  • Practical knowledge of each of the Group's businesses and how they interrelate including a knowledge of the operational structures of senior management and their reporting lines.
  • Develops and maintains a working knowledge of the Group's policies and procedures including the Group’s risk management framework.
  • Develops and maintains a commercial awareness of all businesses and products offered within the L&G Group.
  • Ability to manage the production of both internal and external indirect tax reporting and announcements.
  • Knowledge of L&G Group’s UK general ledger and management reporting system.
  • Sound working knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word, Outlook and Powerpoint.
  • Detailed application of the department’s specific tax software packages.
