The Mortgage Underwriter will assess and process applications and authorise as per company guidelines.

  • Full understanding of the Underwriting process and its controls to ensure all activity is compliant, to ensure the delivery of a high level of technical underwriting and suggesting recommendations for product or process change.
  • Assess and process applications, where case is within mandate ensuring acceptability of risk and liability, then authorise as per company guidelines, escalating for more complex cases or queries
  • Take ownership of underwriting activity referred by team members, including dealing with complex issues and problems, and prepare draft application documents where case is outside mandate for authorisation
  • Interact with customers by telephone, e-mail and letter in order to gather information required to process and assess applications
  • Ensure effective and accurate communication in any form, taking a Treating Customers Fairly approach at all times
  • Handling dissatisfied third party issues and suggesting resolution, raising the matter with Underwriting Manager if proposals are not accepted before the issue is flagged as an official complaint.
  • Apply knowledge to mentor and coach others, provide advice, guidance and technical input in order to improve understanding and job related skills.  Holding information update sessions for team as and when required
  • Support Underwriting Manager by attending technical working groups, weekly operations meetings and meetings with third parties either by conference call or in person with a view to building good business to business relationships
  • Deliver a high standard of customer service and monitor the standard exhibited by Junior Underwriters and Underwriting Administrators, highlighting areas for improvement to the Underwriting Manager
  • Approaching change within the department and to LGHF current product range in a flexible manner
  • Analyse underwriting data to identify trends and produce necessary reports or findings, including statistical information where appropriate, in relation to underwriting activity and bring to the Underwriting management and team’s attention for review
  • Monitoring and reviewing daily workload and distribution of case load according to mandate whilst assessing potential breaches in Service Level Agreements.
  • Experience within Underwriting or strong Mortgage knowledge
  • Strong verbal and written skills and attention to detail.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft.
  • Team Player and flexible approach to work.
  • Comfortable with change: Able to remain motivated within a fast changing growing business and to pass this flexibility on to direct reports and peers
  • Confident with Customers: Able to handle direct customer contact effectively on a range of subjects including business acquisition and complaint handling
  • Good with numbers: Able to pick through data to find useful and relevant information – trends, bottlenecks, areas for improvement and so on.
