We are recruiting for a UK Tax Manager in our London offices

PURPOSE

To work within Group Tax to support the UK Tax Senior Manager and the Tax Compliance and Reporting team.

This is a mixed role involving tax compliance, tax reporting, UK tax technical analysis, M&A, tax advisory and managing tax risks for our businesses. 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Support the UK Tax Senior Manager as a tax business partner to our Legal & General Capital division. Provide tax advice on all mainstream UK tax issues in relation to projects, new initiatives and M&A activity. Produce technical analysis and documentation on key tax issues to include transfer pricing and tax accounting analysis where appropriate.
  • Providing post-transactional support to operationally devolved areas of the Legal & General Capital division (e.g. L&G Homes). This includes completion of the corporation tax computations and returns (using ONESOURCE software) for the Legal & General Capital division, including the relevant claims and elections, computational Transfer Pricing adjustments and responding to HMRC queries. Prepare the tax disclosures for these entities for the statutory accounts.
  • Provide support to the Compliance and Reporting team as needed to support business initiatives.
  • Maintain good technical knowledge of UK corporation tax and develop knowledge of VAT as it applies to our Legal & General Capital division. Communicate tax issues clearly to non-tax specialists.
  • Liaise with key finance and business contacts to build networks to ensure smooth management and communication of tax issues.  Building networks externally with advisors, relevant tax authorities and industry bodies. 
  • Support other members of the tax team with ad hoc queries, projects and transactions. 

Professional knowledge and qualifications

  • Qualified Accountant, or with sufficient experience of financial accounting to maintain up-to-date professional knowledge.
  • Member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation or with sufficient tax experience to maintain up-to-date professional knowledge.
  • A minimum of 3 years corporate tax experience whether in HMRC, accounting practice or industry.

Statutory and regulatory legislation

  • Knowledge of UK Taxes Acts, including corporation tax, VAT and stamp duty to the extent that they apply to the companies in the group for which tax responsibility held.
  • Good knowledge of the tax aspects of UK GAAP and IFRS.
  • Develops knowledge of the key reporting requirements of the PRA and other regulatory bodies where appropriate.
  • Develops understanding of the key concepts which drive regulation within our markets.

Business/Commercial

  • Have an understanding of the general business and financial services environment and regulatory business requirements and its impact on Legal & General's strategy.
  • Develops practical knowledge of each of the Group's businesses and how they interrelate including a knowledge of the operational structures of senior management and their reporting lines.
  • Develops and maintains a working knowledge of the Group's policies and procedures including the Group’s risk management framework.
  • Develops and maintains a commercial awareness of all businesses and products offered within the L&G Group.

Reporting requirements

  • Ability to manage the production of both internal and external financial reporting documentation and announcements.

Systems and IT

  • Develop knowledge of L&G Group’s UK general ledger and management reporting system.
  • Sound working knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word, Outlook and Powerpoint.
  • Detailed application of the department’s specific tax software packages.

Communication

  • Communicate complex technical issues in a clear, simple manner to a wide audience.
  • Prepared to listen to others and work to understand their viewpoint.
  • Ability to create and deliver clear and concise written or verbal reports.
  • Ability to adapt approach to suit audience.

  • Assimilates complex information, identifies key issues, implications and consequences.
  • Ability to review for trends, anticipate problems/omissions and consider potential ways to mitigate them.
  • Be able to take ‘big picture’ approach.
